Barack Obama's attempt in his Notre Dame speech to cloak his deep seated, heinous, pro choice policies and activities with a professed willingness to 'work toward common ground', with his opposition, struck a sour note with many who know better.
Decrying the wording of Notre Dame's honorary degree for Obama, George Weigel, a Catholic theologian and distinguished senior fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, takes particular issue with the statement that Obama engages his political opponents. "I don't see any evidence that President Obama takes the moral arguments of those who disagree with him on the life issues seriously."Weigel said he opposes Notre Dame's decision to invite Obama to speak at its commencement, and he said it's "completely inappropriate" to make him the ninth U.S. president to receive an honorary degree there. "You can't be more offended than people like myself already are," he said.
"Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion candidate ever to seek the office of President of the United States. He was the most extreme pro-abortion member of the United States Senate. Indeed, he was the most extreme pro-abortion legislator ever to serve in either house of the United States Congress. Yet there are Catholics and Evangelicals-even self-identified pro-life Catholics and Evangelicals - who aggressively promoted Obama's candidacy." - 'The Public Discourse'
Anti-abortion activist Randall Terry, founder of the 'Society for Truth and Justice' and the pro-life organization, 'Operation Rescue,' said the degree's language betrayed the teachings of the Catholic church. "This is like a teenage girl who is in love with a pervert and has had the wool pulled over her eyes," Terry said. "This is written by a sycophant, by someone who is writing regurgitated campaign rhetoric. It's betraying the students and it betrays the church's teachings....Obama is not acknowledging the right to life, so it's impossible for him to promote the common good."
Randall said in today's pre-speech FoxNews interview that he finds it preposterous to prioritize civility of discussion in the face of such evil.
A leading Catholic scholar, citing the Obama invitation and honorary degree, declined the school's most prestigious award, making this year's commencement the first time that the Laetare Medal hasn't been given out since 1883. Mary Ann Glendon turned down the Laetare Medal because "the president of Notre Dame, Father Jenkins, turned his back on basic Catholic principles which require that nobody be given a church platform to promote immoral views."
"It is clear that Notre Dame didn't understand what it means to be Catholic when they issued this invitation," Cardinal Francis George of Chicago said after the university announced Obama's appearance.
It is particularly clear that history's stark teachings of emerging evil masquerading as good, and accepted as such by the gullible at large, can be a disrupting, destructive force until it is exposed and overturned. As it always will.
